Field Trips
Here are three geology-oriented field trips that you could take with your students or for your own enrichment. Information to help you plan a trip is included. The trips are based on field trips led by the Illinois State Geological Survey. Detailed guidebooks with point-to-point mileage, feature descriptions, background geology information, maps, and diagrams are available from the Survey for a nominal fee.

Mississippi Palisades
State Park and the Savanna Area
Explore Silurian and Ordovician rocks and fossils in Carroll and
Jo Daviess Counties. Hike the rugged karst topography. See the results
of glaciation from a scenic overview of the Mississippi River Valley.

Area
Located in the part of southern Illinois never reached
by continental glaciers, this area is one of the state’s most
scenic and geologically complex areas. |

Buffalo Rock and the Matthiessen
State Park Area
Observe the effects of glaciers on the topography and drainage of the Midwest. Learn the origin and importance of the St. Peter Sandstone. Explore one of the best exposed cyclothem sites in the northern Illinois Basin. |
