Lesson Plans The lesson plans listed below are designed to help teachers of grades K-12 incorporate earth science and anthropology into their classrooms. The lessons are designed to go hand-in-hand with the GeoGallery of object images from the ISM’s geology and anthropology collections. While written, for the most part, by teachers for grade levels matching their areas of expertise, you will find most lessons can easily be adapted to other grade levels. Lessons sorted by learning standards: Benchmark 3.B.1a: Use prewriting strategies to generate and organize ideas (e.g., focus on one topic; organize writing to include a beginning, middle and end; use descriptive words when writing about people, places, things, events). Benchmark 3.B.3a: Produce documents that convey a clear understanding and interpretation of ideas and information and display focus, organization, elaboration and coherence. Benchmark 3.B.3b: Edit and revise for word choice, organization, consistent point of view and transitions among paragraphs using contemporary technology and formats suitable for submission and/or publication. Benchmark 3.C.1a: Write for a variety of purposes including description, information, explanation, persuasion and narration. Benchmark 4.B.1b: Participate in discussions around a common topic. Benchmark 5.A.3a: Identify appropriate resources to solve problems or answer questions through research. Benchmark 5.A.3b: Design a project related to contemporary issues (e.g., real-world math, career development, community service) using multiple sources. Benchmark 5.C.1a: Write letters, reports and stories based on acquired information.
Benchmark 6.B.3a: Solve practical computation problems involving whole numbers, integers and rational numbers. Benchmark 6.B.3b: Apply primes, factors, divisors, multiples, common factors and common multiples in solving problems. Benchmark 6.D.3: Apply ratios and proportions to solve practical problems. Benchmark 7.B.3: Select and apply instruments including rulers and protractors and units of measure to the degree of accuracy required. Benchmark 7.C.3a: Construct a simple scale drawing for a given situation. Benchmark 7.C.3b: Use concrete and graphic models and appropriate formulas to find perimeters, areas, surface areas and volumes of two- and three-dimensional regions. State Goal 11: Understand the processes of scientific inquiry and technological design to investigate questions, conduct experiments, and to solve problems.

Benchmark 12.E.1a: Identify components and describe diverse features of the Earth's land, water and atmospheric systems.
Benchmark 12.E.1b: Identify and describe patterns of weather and seasonal change. Benchmark 12.E.2a: Identify and explain natural cycles of the Earth's land, water and atmospheric systems (e.g., rock cycle, water cycle, weather patterns). Benchmark 12.E.2b: Describe and explain short-term and long-term interactions of the Earth's components (e.g., earthquakes, types of erosion). Benchmark 12.E.3a: Analyze and explain large-scale dynamic forces, events and processes that affect the Earth’s land, water and atmospheric systems. Benchmark 12.E.3b: Describe interactions between solid earth, oceans, atmosphere and organisms that have resulted in ongoing changes of Earth.

Benchmark 12.E.4b: Describe how rock sequences and fossil remains are used to interpret the age and changes in the Earth. Benchmark 12.E.5: Analyze the processes involved in naturally occurring short-term and long-term Earth events (e.g., floods, ice ages, temperature, sea-level fluctuations). Benchmark 17.B.3a: Explain how physical processes including climate, plate tectonics, erosion, soil formation, water cycle, and circulation patterns in the ocean shape patterns in the environment and influence availability and quality of natural resources. Benchmark 17.C.1a: Identify ways people depend on and interact with the physical environment (e.g., farming, fishing, hydroelectric power). Benchmark 26.A.1e: Identify media and tools and how to use them in a safe and responsible manner when painting, drawing and constructing.
Benchmark 26.B.1d: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create visual works of art using manipulation, eye-hand coordination, building and imagination. Benchmark 26.B.3d: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create 2- and 3- dimensional works and time arts (e.g., film, animation, video) that are realistic, abstract, functional, and decorative. |
